The Trials and Tribulations of Preserving the Dominy Family Home and Workplace.

January 12 @ 2:00 pm3:00 pm

A cautionary tale for preservationists and historians.

On January 12, at 2pm in the Community Room of the Cutchogue Library, Steve Long, Executive director of the East Hampton Historical Society will be giving a talk on the “The Trials and Tribulations of Preserving the Dominy Family Home and Workplace.” A cautionary tale for preservationists and historians.

The Dominy craftsmen were a family made up of American clock, furniture, and watchmakers in East Hampton, but their influence was felt across the entire East End from 1760 to 1840. Like many North Fork historical societies, Cutchogue has several pieces of furniture created by the Dominys.  Other works created by the Dominys are in the collections of the Winterthur Museum, Garden, and Library.

Long will be discussing the family’s legacy and the interesting and problematic history of the preservation of their home and workshops, as well as the recent completion of a replica of their home with the attachment of the original workshops in the exact location it was originally built in the center of East Hampton town.
